First heartbreak: getting by with a little help from my friends.

By Melissa Landers

Happy Monday, everyone! Before I begin, I have a quick announcement to make. I'm running a Goodreads giveaway for an autographed ARC of ALIENATED (coming in February from Disney-Hyperion), and you should totally enter it ---> here!

Win me!

Okay, now back to the subject at hand, which is teenage heartbreak. But instead of focusing on the boy who first bruised my tender heart, I'm going to give a shout-out to the friends who helped take my mind off the pain.

When my first love dropped me like a stone, two of my best buddies were there to help pick up the pieces. And how did they accomplish this feat? With cards and candy, or course!

"Dating can be like a TUG-OF-WAR..."

"...just one big jerk after another!"

Ha ha! Such wise words. My friend, Laura, added such sage musings as, "Why do guys here think we're such stupid airheads? I can think of a few choice words for them too." and "He's a fool to let you go. I think he's being an idiot." (Which he absolutely was...not that I'm biased, or anything.)

My bestie, Heather, delivered this work of art to my door:

Along with this card:

Inside, it reads "Hopefully with M&M's!"

Then she called my ex-boyfriend a "blond rat" and told me to call her. Along with the card, she bundled together a stack of my favorite candy bar for some good old-fashioned chocolate therapy.

What an excellent friend!

Now, obviously cards and candy didn't erase all traces of my heartbreak. That would be impossible. But in showing me how much my friends cared, they sure did ease the pain. I hope I had the presence of mind to thank them for that, but just in case, I'm doing it again: THANK YOU!

Now it's your turn! Tell me how a friend helped pick you up after a fall.

Wow, Melissa, you have really wonderful friends! (And how wonderful that you still have the cards!)
I have awesome friends, too, but gosh, the only story that comes to my mind is the friend who sat on the floor with me at school, holding my hand when I was sad beyond measure because I got dumped the day before. She looked into my eyes and said, "I am here for you FIRST." Nevermind that the reason I got dumped was because he had hooked up with her the day before!

Wha?? She hooked up with your boyfriend and then tried to console you the next day? She must have had some serious brass berries. What a jerk!

Hi Mel. I'm back from the editing cave. What a great post. The cards were hilarious. You are lucky to have such great friends in your life!

And Pintip - that's awful! Did you know her role in the dump or did that come out later?
