For me, the friends I had and made in my teen years were a major part of defining who I am as a person today and the things I do and believe. Those friendships and betrayals are also what helps me write my characters and all the emotional turmoil they go through.
The biggest thing I learned about
friends as a teen is who to is and isn’t your
friend. Of all the friends I had during H.S. and College, I only call about a
dozen of them friends still to this day. Let’s face it; everyone has best
friends and friends who betrayed them as a teen.
For me, two of the girls who are some
of my best friends are actually real life inspirations for two of the
characters in my book LEGENDARY.
(Coincidently they are my main character’s—Aliana Fagan—best friends) Then we
have the betrayals. We all know the saying “Writers don’t get mad. They just
write you into their next novel—as the victim”. I can honestly say I have yet
to do that, despite temptation, but I still use my own feelings from those sad
events to express how my characters feel after similar situations.
One particular event sticks out most in
my mind; mostly because it is about my first “teenage” love. And I say “first
teenage love” instead of “first love” because I believe the love we experience
as a teen is not the same as love we feel as adults. But I digress so…
There was this guy, Dusty, that I
worked with and he was my first “teenage” love. He was funny, charming, and
sweet, had the most beautiful blue eyes you could get lost in and was really a
great guy. I was head over heels for him. A girl that I was friends with at
work knew how I felt about him and offered to help get us together. After weeks
of hoping, it turns out she was really only helping herself to him and telling
him I didn’t like him like that. It broke my heart when I saw them kissing at work
a few days after. (Forgive the graininess of the pictures; digital was not a
thing during high school) Here is a picture of my “teen love” Dustin.
Like I said, we all have those stories,
but I fully believe our real friends, and those who turn out not to be friends,
as a teen, have a huge impact one who we grow up to be. I personally think I’m
the better for every true friend and not-really-a-friend I had as a teen.
Now that you know how I think teen
friendships influence our lives I am thrilled to share some amazing news with
all of you. I am currently in the last stage of negotiations for my 4 book
series The Legendary Saga! Legendary is the first book in the
series and the first book I’ve ever finished and had the courage to put out in
the world. I hope to be making the official announcement in a week or two, but
until then I would love for you to check out Legendary on Goodreads.

Hidden in the mountains of Avalon, King Arthur awaits the Destined One to call him back to life and battle evil once more. Ancient evils have returned, threatening the peace of the seven realms.
Aliana Fagan spent her childhood traveling the world with her parents, growing up on the stories of legendary heroes and mythical lands. But after the violent death of her parents, Aliana spent the next two years hiding behind her camera and in her photo-art. Yet she finds herself thrown into the one adventure she never dreamt could come true. Avalon, King Arthur, Dragons and the Knights of the Round Table. But everything she thought she knew about the Arthurian legends is nothing close to the truth.
Caught between her intense feelings for the noble Sir Galahad and her growing friendship to King Arthur, Aliana will have to lead the knights on an epic adventure across the seven realms to reclaim all they have lost and defeat Mordrid for good.
Yet Mordrid has plans for Aliana, and her powers, that even his greatest ally, Morgana LeFay, knows nothing about.
Along with her plucky guardian dragon, Daggerhorne, Aliana will discover the meaning of friendship, bravery, loyalty, true love and forgiveness. But can she do it all in time to save the realms from Mordrid's impending Armageddon?
